How to Take Better TG-7 Macro Photos with Close-Up Lenses

The TG-7 Is Already an Incredible Macro Camera
There's a reason the OM SYSTEM TG-7 has become one of the most popular underwater cameras in the world. It's compact, easy to travel with, and its famous Microscope Mode lets photographers capture incredibly small marine life that many cameras struggle to photograph.
While Microscope Mode is an incredible feature, it's not always the best way to achieve the highest-quality macro images.
Instead of relying on digital magnification, we recommend using optical close-up lenses (diopters) to increase magnification while preserving the image quality of the camera.
The result is cleaner files, sharper detail, and a more natural shooting experience underwater.
Why Optical Magnification Beats Digital Zoom

One of the biggest misconceptions in macro photography is that more magnification is always better. In reality, the best lens depends on the size of your subject. A coral colony, a nudibranch, and a tiny shrimp all require different levels of magnification to fill the frame while maintaining image quality and working distance.
Not Sure Which Lens Is Right for Your Diving?
Every underwater photographer shoots something different. Some love nudibranchs and tiny shrimp, while others spend their dives photographing frogfish, octopus, or fish portraits. The "best" macro lens depends on the subjects you enjoy most, your diving conditions, and even the strobes and housing you're using.
That's why we offer free one-on-one consultations. We'll help you choose the right lens, explain how to use it underwater, and make sure it fits your housing before you buy.

Choosing the Right INON Close-Up Lens

Why We Recommend the XD Bayonet Mount
If you're building a TG-7 system today, start with the XD Bayonet Mount. Being able to swap lenses underwater in seconds makes it easier to adapt as subjects change throughout a dive. Once you've used a bayonet system, it's hard to imagine going back to threading lenses on and off underwater.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use the UCL-165 with the TG-7?
Yes. The UCL-165 is an excellent everyday macro lens for the TG-7, making it ideal for nudibranchs, shrimp, frogfish, and other common macro subjects.
Should I use Microscope Mode or a close-up lens?
Microscope Mode is excellent for getting started. However, optical close-up lenses can provide higher image quality while giving you more flexibility for lighting and composition.
Which INON lens should I buy first?
For most TG-7 photographers, the UCL-165 is the best starting point. It offers a comfortable working distance, fast autofocus, and enough magnification for a wide variety of marine life.
