Serious Light for Underwater Video
The Kraken Sports Hydra 10000 WRGBU is built for underwater photographers and videographers who need powerful, even illumination without giving up creative lighting options.
At its core is a 10,000-lumen continuous white light paired with a broad 120° soft flood beam. That combination provides the coverage needed for reefs, wrecks, divers, large marine life, and other wide-angle underwater scenes while minimizing distracting hot spots in your footage.
Unlike a basic white-only video light, however, the Hydra adds Red, Green, Blue, UV, RGB, Burst, SOS, and Disco modes, making it an exceptionally versatile tool for both imaging and general diving.
Bring Color Back Underwater
Water begins absorbing warm wavelengths of light almost immediately as you descend. As depth increases, reds and oranges disappear, leaving video looking increasingly blue or green.
A powerful video light places full-spectrum light back onto your subject.
The Hydra 10000 produces approximately 5600K white light with a CRI of around 90, helping underwater cameras reproduce more natural reds, oranges, skin tones, and other colors.
For underwater video, where correcting poor lighting in post-production can be difficult, starting with good-quality light at the subject makes a substantial difference.
120° Soft Flood Beam
Brightness isn't the only specification that matters in an underwater video light.
The Hydra 10000 spreads its output across a wide 120° beam, providing broad illumination appropriate for wide-angle underwater imaging. Kraken specifically designed the beam to provide smooth coverage without the concentrated center hot spot that can become distracting in video.
This makes it particularly useful for:
- Reef scenes
- Wrecks
- Divers
- Large marine life
- Wide-angle video
- Close-focus wide-angle
- Action-camera rigs
- Mirrorless and DSLR video systems
For larger scenes, a pair of Hydra 10000 lights can be positioned on opposite sides of the housing to create broader and more balanced illumination.
10,000 Lumens of Sustained Output
Kraken rates the Hydra 10000 for 10,000 lumens of continuous output, rather than advertising a short-lived peak output that immediately steps down.
Kraken states that the battery and drive circuitry are engineered to maintain consistent brightness so exposure doesn't unexpectedly change while recording.
That's particularly important for video. A light that rapidly reduces output as it heats up can create exposure and color inconsistencies between clips.
High CRI for Better Underwater Color
With a CRI of approximately 90, the Hydra 10000 is designed with image quality—not just raw brightness—in mind.
CRI, or Color Rendering Index, describes how accurately a light reproduces colors compared with a natural reference source.
For underwater shooters, higher-quality light can mean better reproduction of the reds, oranges, yellows, corals, and skin tones that lower-quality LEDs may render poorly.
Mozaik Tip: Don't shop for an underwater video light based on lumens alone. Beam quality, beam angle, color temperature, and CRI all influence how the final footage actually looks.
WRGBU for More Creative Lighting
The Hydra 10000 goes far beyond conventional white illumination.
Its available color modes include White, Red, Green, Blue, UV, and RGB, providing different tools for different types of dives and creative shooting.
White Mode is your primary photo and video illumination.
Red Mode is particularly useful during night dives and can provide illumination while being less intrusive around some nocturnal marine life.
UV Mode opens the door to fluorescence diving and photography. Pair it with the appropriate yellow barrier filter to reveal fluorescent colors in corals and marine organisms that are difficult or impossible to see under conventional white light.
RGB modes provide additional creative lighting possibilities for underwater photography and video.
12,000-Lumen Fiber Optic Burst Mode
The Hydra 10000 can also produce a 12,000-lumen burst triggered through a fiber-optic connection to a camera flash.
This provides a temporary increase in brightness timed with the camera's shutter and can be particularly useful for macro photography of slower-moving subjects.
There is an important distinction, however: burst mode does not turn the Hydra into a traditional xenon strobe.
A dedicated underwater strobe produces an extremely short flash duration that is particularly effective at freezing fast-moving subjects. The Hydra's LED burst lasts longer, so it won't freeze rapid motion in the same way.
For slower macro subjects such as nudibranchs, coral details, and cleaning-station subjects, however, the burst mode provides another useful imaging option.
New Push-Button + Dial Controls
Controls that feel easy on land can become frustrating at 60 feet while wearing gloves.
Kraken uses a push-button and dial interface on the Hydra 10000, designed to make output and mode adjustments easier underwater.
The light offers 11-step dimming from 0–100%, giving you substantially more control than simply choosing between low, medium, and high output.
This allows you to reduce power for close subjects, conserve battery life, or balance artificial light against ambient sunlight.
Runtime That You Can Manage Around the Dive
At maximum 10,000-lumen output, Kraken specifies approximately 35 minutes of runtime.
At approximately 8,000 lumens, runtime increases to around 60 minutes.
That flexibility is useful because maximum power isn't necessary for every shot. Reducing output when you're closer to the subject can preserve battery life while still providing plenty of illumination.
User-Replaceable 21700 Batteries
The Hydra 10000 uses three user-replaceable 21700 battery cells, rather than permanently sealing the batteries inside the light.
For traveling photographers and multi-dive shooting days, a replaceable battery system provides a useful long-term advantage.
Kraken recommends using approved cells that meet the required current and safety specifications.
USB-C PD Charging
Charging is handled through USB-C Power Delivery, with Kraken specifying approximately three hours for a full recharge.
USB-C charging can simplify a travel kit by reducing the number of specialized chargers and power adapters required for an underwater camera system.
Remote-Control Ready
The Hydra 10000 is compatible with Kraken's optional KR-RC02 Remote, allowing compatible lighting functions to be controlled from a more convenient position on the camera rig.
This can be especially valuable with dual-light configurations where reaching out to independently adjust each light becomes cumbersome.
Build a Better-Balanced Camera Rig
At approximately 740g on land and 350g underwater, the Hydra 10000 adds noticeable negative buoyancy to a camera system.
Kraken offers the optional KR-FB04 Float, designed specifically for the Hydra 10000 to bring the light close to neutral buoyancy.
Reducing the effective underwater weight of your lighting system can make a major difference during long dives, particularly when using two lights on extended arms.
Mozaik Tip: When building a dual-light video system, think about buoyancy at the same time you select your arms and clamps. A properly balanced system is easier to hold steady, easier to reposition, and considerably more comfortable over a full dive.
One Light, Multiple Types of Diving
The Hydra 10000 is particularly attractive because it doesn't lock you into one type of underwater shooting.
Use the wide white beam for video and wide-angle photography.
Reduce the output for macro and close-up subjects.
Switch to red during a night dive.
Use UV with the appropriate filter for fluorescence photography.
Use fiber-optic burst when photographing suitable slower-moving subjects.
That makes the Hydra 10000 an excellent choice for divers who want one premium lighting platform that can serve several different purposes instead of carrying a separate light for each application.
